No One is Thinking About You
...and that's a good thing.
What’s difficult, even as a consumer, is that we rarely feel important anymore.
Whether that’s being one of the billions served by McDonalds or Starbucks, or helping Apple or Tesla sell out of their latest product.
Or helping a creator reach a million views, followers, or subscribers.
Or being part of a box office number or TV rating for a movie or show that will ultimately get cancelled anyway. Who are we beyond a statistic or demographic?
We aren’t makers or breakers. Our voice doesn’t seem to matter anymore, even on Yelp or NextDoor. Posting something passionate online is like screaming into a void…
(And let's not get started with political elections, no matter what side you're on!)
Is anyone listening? The answer is: no…
HOW ABOUT IN REAL LIFE?
Also, no...
Look. Many people care about you, but they also usually care about themselves more. Or they care about what’s directly in front of them. I don’t blame ‘em.
We're all distracted… yet we also have a ton of responsibilities and a lot of work to do with barely any time to consider the busy, complicated lives of others.
So here's the trick: stop thinking about them too!
A QUOTE I HEARD FROM 'THINK LIKE A MONK' BY JAY SHETTY THAT QUOTE: 'BLOWS HIS MIND:’
"I am not who you think I am; I am not who I think I am; I am who I think you think I am." - American sociologist, Charles Horton Cooley.
OK. We are spending precious time and energy worrying about people who aren't thinking about us… and on top of that, we're making it all up.
In scientific or psychological terms (I'm neither of those things by the way), it's called: “The Spotlight Effect.” AKA we way overthink how much others think about us.
Or in ‘90s pop culture terms (more up my alley) everybody is suffering from a sort of "Truman Show“ or “Big Brother” syndrome.
Or a main character energy, if you will.
So let's tone it down. We need to get out of our own heads, out of everyone else's heads, and create like no one's watching.
Because they aren't.
LASTLY, LET THE FACT THAT NOBODY THINKS ABOUT YOU LET YOU DO THESE TWO THINGS:
Stop consuming so much and giving into these greedy corporations. Make them care by how much you don't care.
Start creating free from judgement, really go for it, try to make a splash, knowing that otherwise literally nobody will see or listen otherwise.
It's Hard Out Here for a Consumer…. Might as well be a Creator.
